Vacancy Notice: India Chair Professor of Port Management

The Government of India has endowed one professorial Chair at WMU, and WMU is now seeking to fill the India Chair in the area of Port Management.

The World Maritime University was established in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations. WMU wishes to enhance its role as a global centre of excellence for postgraduate education and research in the maritime field. WMU offers Master of Science programs in Sweden and under its International Outreach Program in China. WMU also offers a Ph.D. program in Maritime Affairs that offers doctoral students opportunities for research across the maritime field, from shipping & port management to maritime safety, security and environmental management.

Responsibilities

Professors are expected, under the supervision of the Vice-President (Academic) to be engaged in:

  • Teaching, including engagement in the MSc teaching programs in Malmö, and other locations as needed and assigned,
  • Responsibility for the development and execution of curriculum in the Shipping and Port Management Specializations with a special emphasis on building human resource management capacity of Port professionals,
  • Leading and coordinating research on port management subjects and issues,
  • Involvement in distance education and Professional Development Courses (PDCs), as required,
  • Mentoring of PhD and MSc students and supervision of research theses/dissertations,
  • Scholarship in the form of publications in peer-reviewed journals, books, book chapters, etc.,
  • Development of research projects, submission of project proposals, management of projects,
  • Presentation of research findings at professional conferences and meetings,
  • Serve on WMU committees and work groups, and active participation in administrative, academic, and curriculum duties.
  • Act as the focal point between WMU and the Ministry of Shipping to convey the spirit and deliverables of the WMU-India Memorandum of Understanding by building capacity in port management and human resource development. 

Subject areas for Chairholder Teaching and Research

  • Act as the focal point between WMU and the Ministry of Shipping to convey the spirit and deliverables of the WMU-India Memorandum of Understanding by building capacity in port management and human resource development. 
  • Convention and Treaty instruments in the broad field of Shipping and Ports,
  • Economic, human resource development/management, safety and security aspects of ports impacting on shipping
  • The role of Government and Industry (including public-private partnerships) in the administration of national ports and related shipping issues.

Essential Qualifications, Competencies and Professional Experience

  • The successful candidate will also have a Ph.D. and experience in a maritime-related discipline,
  • Expertise in port management, shipping and related regulatory issues related to maritime transportation,
  • Fluency in spoken and written English,

Desirable Qualifications, Competencies and Professional Experience

  • A minimum of 3-5 years experience in a teaching and/or research environment,
  • Teaching and supervisory experience at postgraduate university level (Master’s and Ph.D.programs),
  • Demonstrated record of research and publications in the related field,
  • Additional desirable skills are:
  • Diversified working experience, especially at the international level,
  • Computer literacy,
  • Excellent Communication skills.
